…Gibraltar is a British overseas territory located near the southernmost tip of the Iberian Peninsula overlooking the Strait of Gibraltar. The narrow neck separates Europe from Africa and provides the only link between the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea. The territory shares a border with Spain to the north. Gibraltar has historically been an important base. The name of the territory is derived from the Arabic, meaning "mountain of Tariq", who led the initial incursion into Iberia in advance of the main Moorish force in 711. When you first see the Rock of Gibraltar, whether it is from the air, from the sea or from either the Costa del Sol or the western end of the Bay, it is its impressive stature, towering isolated above the surrounding countryside. Being limestone, the Rock which is geologically very different from the surrounding landscape, is riddled with caves. For the person interested in natural history, whether it is on land or sea, Gibraltar is incredibly rich and full of surprises at any time of the year.
